ENSEMBLE OROCHI
Based in The Hague, the ensemble takes its name from a legendary eight-headed dragon in Japanese folklore.
Consisting of eight members, featuring six instrumentalists, mezzo-soprano Lotus Klinkspoor and conductor Kanako Abe, our name symbolizes the blending of eight artistic personas.
Specializing in contemporary music and in music from the 20th century, we give great importance to the role of new-generation artists and composers in shaping the cultural values of our century. To highlight their impact, we prioritize premiering newly written compositions in each of our performances. Our belief is that modern music is not a separate genre, but emerges from the evolution of music over time. With this in mind, we present new and pre-existing music side by side in our upcoming projects.
Overall, our core objectives are to bridge the gap between contemporary compositions and listeners and infuse new approaches to classical works through collaborations and arrangements. Our goal is to make music more accessible by bringing a refreshing approach to current concert practice by incorporating visuals, projections, theater, and literature. We provide a unique contribution to today’s performance practice, by creating a connection between traditions and modernity in an interdisciplinary setting.
